Note de contenu :

Titre : Ecological limits of development : Living with the sustainable development goals Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kaitlin Kish, Auteur ; Stephen Quilley, Auteur Editeur : London [UK] : Routledge Année de publication : 2023 Importance : 1 vol. (294 p.) Présentation : ill.en coul. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-00-047147-2 Catégories : Ecologie et Environnement - Météorologie - Clémat - Biodiversité Mots-clés : développement durable Index. décimale : 338.927 (développement durable, économie de l'environnement... Résumé :
Embracing the reality of biophysical limits to growth, this volume uses the technical tools from ecological economics to re-cast the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as Ecological Livelihood Goals - policy agendas and trajectories that seek to reconcile the social and spatial mobility and liberty of individuals, with both material security and ecological integrity. Since the 1970s, mainstream approaches to sustainable development have sought to reconcile ecological constraints with modernization through much vaunted and seldom demonstrated strategies of 'decoupling' and 'dematerialization.' In this context, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become the orchestrating drivers of sustainability governance. However, biophysical limits are not so easily side-stepped. Building on an ecological-economic critique of mainstream economics, and a historical-sociological understanding of state-formation, this book explores the implications of ecological limits for modern progressive politics. Each chapter outlines leverage points for municipal engagement in local and regional contexts. Systems theory and community development perspectives are used to explore under-appreciated avenues for the kind of social and cultural change that would be necessary for any accommodation between modernity and ecological limits. Drawing on ideas from H.T Odum, Herman Daly, Zigmunt Bauman, and many others, this book provides guiding research for a convergence between North and South that is bottom up, household-centred, and predicated on a re-emerging domain of Livelihood. In each chapter, the authors provide recommendations for reconfiguring the UN's SDGs as Ecological Livelihood Goals - a framework for sustainable development in an era of limits. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of ecological economics, socio-ecological systems, political economy, international and community development, global governance, and sustainable developmentNote de contenu :

GIS and Machine Learning for Small Area Classifications in Developing Countries / Adegbola Ojo / London : CRC press (2023)

Titre : GIS and Machine Learning for Small Area Classifications in Developing Countries Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Adegbola Ojo, Auteur Editeur : London : CRC press Année de publication : 2023 Importance : 1 vol. (246 p.) Présentation : ill.en coul.
Since the emergence of contemporary area classifications, population geography has witnessed a renaissance in the area of policy related spatial analysis. Area classifications subsume geodemographic systems which often use data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms to simplify large and complex bodies of information about people and the places in which they live, work and undertake other social activities. Outputs developed from the grouping of small geographical areas on the basis of multi- dimensional data have proved beneficial particularly for decision-making in the commercial sectors of a vast number of countries in the northern hemisphere. This book argues that small area classifications offer countries in the Global South a distinct opportunity to address human population policy related challenges in novel ways using area-based initiatives and evidence-based methods.
This book exposes researchers, practitioners, and students to small area segmentation techniques for understanding, interpreting, and visualizing the configuration, dynamics, and correlates of development policy challenges at small spatial scales. It presents strategic and operational responses to these challenges in cost effective ways. Using two developing countries as case studies, the book connects new transdisciplinary ways of thinking about social and spatial inequalities from a scientific perspective with GIS and Data Science. This offers all stakeholders a framework for engaging in practical dialogue on development policy within urban and rural settings, based on real-world examples.

After the collapse of Soviet Union and its Marxist-Leninist economic and political model of development the Washington consensus inspired model of economic and political development popularly known as Globalization became the new mantra , the panacea to cure all societal ills, and the only option to raise global humanity from poverty, ill health, and political oppression. There is no doubt that it lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, however its many gains were not equally or even near equally distributed. Economic inequality, human rights suffered specially in China and several countries in Eastern Europe, environmental degradation, unemployment , unregulated and unbridled dominance by multinationals (mostly Western , Americans ) brought about unprecedented economic crisis and social fragmentation. These developments raised serious doubts and questions about the viability of globalization model. The "discontent with globalization" forced academics and policymakers to reevaluate other alternatives. The present anthology discusses some of these issues in a comparative context by presenting alternative models to Western unregulated free market Globalization model.Note de contenu :
