Abstract
Since time immemorial, humans have relied on animals to meet their needs across various fields. Animals have been domesticated to serve as companions (cats and dogs), beasts of burden for hauling and plowing (oxen), and sources of recreation (horses) and nutrition (cattle, sheep, goats, and other edible species). Furthermore, the utility of animals extends beyond these roles; they have rendered immense service to humanity, particularly in scientific research and the medical field. Animals play an irreplaceable role in the advancement of experimental sciences, including fundamental biology, pharmacology, and medicine. Thanks to laboratory animals, humans have been able to understand and explain complex physiological processes within their own bodies, as well as induce and treat specific diseases. Consequently, humans cannot do without animals—not merely for nutritional purposes, but to satisfy the scientific curiosity that drives the discovery and exploration of treatments for diseases threatening humanity, such as cancer in all its forms and AIDS.
