Abstract

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection caused by dermatophytes, predominantly affecting prepubertal children. This retrospective study was conducted at the Parasitology and Medical Mycology Laboratory of the University Hospital of Sétif from 2022 to 2025 to investigate the epidemiological and mycological characteristics of diagnosed cases in the Sétif region. A total of 588 cases were included. Male predominance was observed (67%), with a mean age of 7.7 years. Children aged 6–10 years were the most affected group. Contact with animals was identified as the main predisposing factor (46%). Mycological findings revealed a clear predominance of Microsporum canis (88.2%), followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes (6.18%). These findings highlight the importance of mycological diagnosis in the management of tinea capitis and emphasize the major role of zoonotic transmission in the Sétif region.
