Abstract
The artificial insemination (AI) is a significant biotechnological tool for the improvement of
animal’s genetic selection.
The objective of our study is to show the effect of synchronization and the AI on the
performances of both reproduction and productivity at the race Ouled Djellal raised in
pastoral system in the Algerian semi arid area, the study related to 193 ewes from 2 to 6 years
old and with a body score from 1 to 4.75 divided into two batches, the first undergoes an allin wrestling whereas the second undergoes an induction and a synchronization of heats by
vaginal sponges of FGA (40mg) during 14 days, follow-ups by an injection of PMSG. The
ewes were inseminated 55 hours after the withdrawal with fresh sperm prepared in two
different diluters.
The AI is not influenced by the studding factors. However The AI acts significantly on
reproductive performance (p <0.001), it provides fertility rates (43%) and fertility (63%) low.
Catch-up after the catching up to achieve these rates increase (94%) and (119%) and become
comparable to rates found in the control group (93%) and (109%).
The rate of prolificacy is significantly higher in the ewes inseminated (126%) compared to
those fought naturally (117 %) (p<0, 05).
Our results show also a significant increase in the rates of and ponderal productivity
(26,4kg/ewe) in the ewes inseminated compared to 17, 8kg/ewe in the control batch with
p<0,001.
In conclusion, the AI is recommended in our breeding to improve the performances of
reproduction and productivity.
