Abstract

Introduction: Oral chemotherapy plays a key role in cancer management, offering notable advantages in terms of patient convenience. However, this treatment pathway presents critical challenges, particularly the risks of non-adherence and poor therapeutic management. Therapeutic Patient education (ETP) is essential in ensuring proper medication use by addressing these issues. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of a structured therapeutic education program on cancer patients treated with Capecitabine. Materials and Methods: A therapeutic patient education (TPE) program was established at the Sétif Cancer Center (Oncology Department) and divided into several educational sessions. These sessions were scheduled over a period of two months for a group of 12 patients on capecitabine. Various teaching methods were used, including PowerPoint presentations, explanatory posters, a Facebook support group, phone reminders, etc. Two evaluations were conducted using pre- and posteducation questionnaires. Additionally, a comparison was made with a nonparticipating group. - Results: This educational program demonstrated a positive impact in terms of treatment, management of missed doses and adverse effects, necessary precautions, and dietary hygiene rules. The evaluation grid revealed an improvement score of 1.75 between the first and last sessions. This score was significantly higher compared to non-participants (3.25) - Conclusion: In conclusion, we affirm that therapeutic education is a crucial tool for informing, training, and educating patients on oral anticancer to ensure autonomy in treatment management.
