Abstract
It was in the 19th century that Western societies sought to promote the responsible exploitation of natural resources in order to guarantee their sustainability. It was then that the first naturalist movements emerged, calling for the conservation of pristine or wild nature. The emphasis was placed on preserving so-called untouched and inviolable natural spaces—natural monuments. From this concept stemmed the first national parks and protected areas, such as Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1872, the world's first national park, Royal National Park in Australia in 1879, and Banff National Park in Canada in 1885….
