Abstract
Immunity refers to the set of defense mechanisms that enable living organisms to recognize,
resist, and eliminate foreign agents, particularly infectious microorganisms, as well as other
potentially harmful factors that may threaten normal physiological functions or survival. The
organs, tissues, cells, and molecules involved in these protective processes collectively
constitute the immune system, while the coordinated actions of these components against
pathogens are known as the immune response.
Immunology is the scientific discipline dedicated to the study of the immune system and its
functions. The foundations of modern immunology are generally attributed to Edward Jenner,
who demonstrated in 1796 that vaccination could provide protection against smallpox. Since
then, immunology has evolved into a major branch of life sciences and biomedical research.
For many years, immunological research focused primarily on the mechanisms of host defense
against infectious diseases. However, advances in cellular and molecular biology have revealed
that the immune system plays a central role in a wide range of physiological and pathological
processes. Today, immunology is essential for understanding allergies, autoimmune diseases,
chronic inflammatory disorders, cancer, transplantation, immunodeficiencies, and many other
human diseases.
The immune system can be viewed as a highly sophisticated and dynamic network composed
of numerous interacting cells, tissues, and molecular mediators. Its remarkable organization is
the result of millions of years of evolution, leading to a defense system that is both highly
efficient and tightly regulated. The ability of the immune system to distinguish self from non-
self, eliminate pathogens, maintain tissue homeostasis, and generate immunological memory is
fundamental for the survival of all multicellular organisms.
Understanding how this complex system functions is one of the major challenges of modern
biomedical sciences. A thorough knowledge of immunological mechanisms is essential not
only for understanding disease pathogenesis but also for developing innovative diagnostic tools,
vaccines, immunotherapies, and biotechnological applications.
