Abstract

Immunology is now a major medical discipline, on par with microbiology and hematology, which long housed it. This rise is justified by the growing importance of immunological concepts and techniques in the biological sciences and in all areas of medicine. There are few (if any) organs that cannot be targeted by an immune attack; most infectious diseases are associated with immunological events that promote, complicate, or, fortunately, more often, slow the progression of the infection. Transplant rejection and perhaps tumor rejection are essentially due to immunological phenomena. Finally, immunology is at the origin of the discovery of new chemical or biological drugs, which can transform the course of numerous diseases.
