Abstract
Description
This study aims to assess the wastewater treatment status at the Aïn Sfihia Wastewater Treatment Plant in the city of Sétif, which plays a crucial role in environmental protection by eliminating pathogenic agents harmful to public health. This ensures the safe discharge of treated wastewater in compliance with established discharge standards,The findings indicate that the treatment plant has a capacity of 66,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, operating through the activated sludge biological treatment process. The physicochemical analysis of the treated water shows that it has a low level of pollution, contains no heavy metals, and complies with the standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, the treated water poses no risk to the flora, fauna, or microorganisms located downstream of the plant, particularly in Oued Bousselam, and therefore does not disturb the ecological balance,However, the plant faces challenges in treating the total volume of urban wastewater due to rapid population growth and continuous urban expansion. In addition, the facility is aging and suffers from equipment failures and insufficient maintenance. Therefore, rehabilitating and upgrading the plant is essential to enhance its treatment capacity, promote the reuse of treated wastewater in sectors such as agriculture and industry, preserve this vital water resource, ensure the continuity of the natural water cycle, and support sustainable local development.
