Abstract
The art of dental surgery is constantly evolving. Oral restorations, increasingly sophisticated, must meet several requirements: biocompatibility, integration, durability, and aesthetics.
This last point is the one that has evolved the most in recent years; currently, in society, a smile must be beautiful. For the patient, it is no longer the effectiveness of the prosthesis they receive that matters most, but its visual appearance. Implants are now the most comfortable, convenient, and suitable solution for replacing a single tooth or even multiple missing teeth. They are also a preferred solution because they integrate perfectly with their biological environment; however, achieving the desired aesthetic result for both the patient and the practitioner can sometimes be complicated. Indeed, the visual appearance will depend on the prosthesis and its surrounding soft tissues.
The aim of this work is to analyze the different techniques for managing peri-implant soft tissues to achieve the highest possible level of aesthetics and function.
Peri-implant tissue can be effectively managed and influenced at four points during treatment:
- Before implant placement:
The advantage is that it allows for optimal augmentation of the hard and soft tissue volumes of the ridge. The disadvantage is that the number of surgical procedures and the overall treatment time are increased.
- During implant placement and/or during healing:
Whenever possible, implant placement and surgical augmentation should be performed simultaneously. This approach reduces the number of surgical procedures and the overall treatment time, although the risk of failure may be greater.
- During the second surgical stage
The second surgical stage presents a real opportunity to treat the peri-implant tissues, and soft tissues in particular, without increasing the overall treatment time.
- During maintenance
A reassessment is recommended to determine the necessary adjustments around the implant, aiming to achieve a peri-implant environment as close to ideal as possible.
