Abstract

The prevention of complications related to dyslipidemia inevitably requires good management of these biological abnormalities. The objective of our study was to study the characteristics of the prescription of lipid-lowering agents in the city of Setif. This is a descriptive cross-sectional epidemiological study, conducted on 88 patients in the wilaya of Setif, treated with lipid-lowering agents, during the period from January 2023 to May 2023. Analysis of the collected data showed that; Our study population was elderly (60.57 years ± 12.87 years), predominantly male (59.1%), one-third (31.8%) had a higher level of education, (7.9%) of the patients were retirees. The prevalence of other cardiovascular risk factors was smoking (25%), diabetes (61.4%), obesity (31.8%), hypertension (71.6%) and physical inactivity (69.3%). For dyslipidemia data, the majority of the population (70.5%) had dyslipidemia, more than half of lipid-lowering prescriptions (53.4%) were made by cardiologists, (85.2%) as part of secondary prevention, the majority of lipid-lowering agents prescribed (86.4%) were statins, more than half of the population (56.5%) were on Atorvastatin, the majority (85.2%) were taking the treatment regularly, (40.9%) of patients did not apply hygiene- dietary rules, (81.8%) had complications, ischemic heart disease was the most common (28.4%). For data on the role of community pharmacy staff in the management of dyslipidemia, the majority of the population reported that community pharmacy staff play their role in raising awareness of dyslipidemia (88.6%), and that they received a good explanation from pharmacy staff regarding the use of lipid-lowering therapy (85.2%).
