Abstract
During these last decades, a particular interest has been given to distribution networks and the load flow of the later. This interest is justified by the high level of branch currents which cause a high voltage drops and non-negligible power losses that will be reduced. The more indicated means in this case is the placement of shunt capacitors for which it is necessary to find the optimal number, powers and locations. For this a heuristic method has been given where the suitable locations of the capacitors are determined using voltage stability indices which are fast and easy to calculate. Voltage stability indices have been compared to determine the most effective of them. The capacitors optimal sizes are determined by solving a constrained non-linear optimization problem.
