Abstract

Infective endocarditis is a serious disease of the endocardium and heart valves, caused by a variety of infectious agents. Embolic complications of infective endocarditis are common and often fatal. At present, antimicrobial therapy is the only medical intervention proven to reduce the risk of embolism associated with infective endocarditis. The objective of our work was to evaluate the effect of aspirin on trombembolic events related to infective endocarditis. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis on 11 studies selected according to welldefined criteria. The results of these studies show a discordance that does not allow us to decide whether or not aspirin is a protective factor against the occurrence of embolic events. The study by Anavekar and al., 2007 reported a beneficial effect of aspirin with (12%) of embolic events in patients on aspirin versus (27.8%) in patients not treated with aspirin, while in 2011, he reported that aspirin was a risk factor with (12.9%) of embolic events in patients treated with aspirin versus (6%) in those not treated. This is probably due to several factors such as the dose of aspirin used in each study and the comorbidities already existing in patients treated with aspirin.
