Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), Mycoplasma hominis (MH) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), are frequently observed, particularly in Algeria's neighboring countries. However, the lack of recent data on their prevalence in the country is cause for concern. This lack of data is largely the result of a approach based mainly on syndromes, with no systematic etiological diagnosis. These infections lead to serious complications for women's health, such as pelvic inflammations and infertility, as well as increased risks for maternal and fetal health, including prematurity, low birth weight and neonatal infections. Studies on the prevalence and epidemiological and clinical characteristics of these STIs in Algeria are therefore urgently needed to better manage these infections and strengthen prevention strategies. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence rate of infections with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), Mycoplasma hominis (MH) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) in patients consulting for a genital infection in Batna commune. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of female patients aged 18 and over, with genital activity, residing in the Batna commune, who consulted between 1 March 2021 and 31 December 2022, for genital infection. For each patient, an information sheet on socio-data and risk factors was completed. All women benefited from a clinical examination and endocervical sampling with microbiological testing for the five pathogens.
