Abstract
White colored glass glazes with high solar reflectance containing different concentrations of WO3 were prepared and characterized with respect to their optical, mechanical and microstructural characteristics, for application in mitigating the global problem of global warming, or more specifically, in countering the urban heat island (UHI) effect. With the addition of WO3 to a glass containing SiO2, B2O3, Al2O3, Na2O, CaO and ZnO, the crystallization of CaWO4 scheelite follows a bulk-type crystallization mechanism where the scheelite grows in one dimension in a patterned morphology dominated by the heating rate and WO3 concentration. Octahedral bipyramids and arrow-shaped crystals appeared in glazes containing WO3 concentration above 6%. The presence of scheelite crystals with different orientations also leads to slight variations in hardness and Young's modulus; Hv values between 8 and 8.8 GPa and E values between 72 and 83 GPa are obtained. Similarly, optical properties such as whiteness and solar reflectance increase with the presence of scheelite, and the highest solar reflectance occurs for the glaze containing arrow-shaped and bipyramidal crystals. The Egopt optical gap band of the glass decreases with the addition of WO3, which means that WO3 enters the glass matrix as a glass network modifier and increases the concentration of non bridging oxygen ions in the glass. The effects of the addition of WO3 and ZnO and as well the effect of the adopted thermal protocol for the glaze’s preparation on the different properties were also studied.
