Abstract
COVID-19 is severe viral pneumonia caused by SARS-COV-2 that has spread rapidly all
over the planet causing an increased number of deaths , following an unfavorable evolution
of the patients and their admission to intensive care units. The aim of the present work is to
study the demographic, clinical, biological and therapeutic aspects as well as to identify the
factors associated with the death of patients affected by this disease.
All the parameters were collected retrospectively through a review of the records of patients
with COVID-19 pneumonia who were hospitalized at the University Hospital of Setif.
A total of 302 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia (199 men and 103 women) were included
in the present study, of whom 234 died, for a mortality rate of 79.59 % .
The most common comorbidities were hypertension and diabetes. Symptoms were dominated
by dyspnea (80.9%), followed by dry cough (62.6%), asthenia (45.5%) and fever (40.6%).
ARDS was present in 97% of patients, the major complications were bacterial superinfection
(73%), shock (35.7%) and fungal superinfection (33.3%).
Univariate comparative analysis revealed that age ≥ 50 years (p<0.01), pre-existing
hypertension (p=0.002), bacterial superinfection ( p<0.01), fungal superinfection ( p<0.01)
and shock ( p= 0.039) were significantly associated with unfavorable outcome and patient
mortality .
Significantly, the mortality of the disease was associated with an increase in procalcitonin
(p<0.001), CRP (p<0.001), DD at discharge (p=0.001), creatinemia (p<0.001), neutrophils
(p=0.014) and white blood cells (p<0.001) and a decrease in platelets and hemoglobin at
discharge (p<0.001).
