Abstract

This study focused on avian coccidiosis, a widespread and economically significant disease in poultry, caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria. The work consists, firstly, of conducting a survey among veterinarians and broiler chicken farmers in the study region using a questionnaire. Secondly, it aims to evaluate in vitro the anticoccidial effect of the hydro-ethanolic extract of a plant from the Sétif region (white wormwood leaves) at three concentrations (400, 200, 100 μg/ml) on the inhibition of sporulation of cecal coccidiosis oocysts caused by Eimeria tenella. The survey results revealed that avian coccidiosis is present throughout the Sétif region. It was diagnosed in several farms, and farming conditions significantly contributed to the establishment of this disease. To control coccidiosis, the use of chemically derived anticoccidial drugs is the most common practice. Farmers have good knowledge about the disease but do not adhere to hygiene conditions. Both veterinarians and farmers observed resistance in chickens following the irrational use of anticoccidials by farmers. Some farmers use plants (garlic, …) to control coccidiosis in their farms.
