Abstract

Pharmacoeconomics has become an essential field in the world of healthcare. It is an indispensable tool for many stakeholders within the pharmaceutical industry, public authorities, and the medical community. This study aims to provide statistics on the consumption of psychotropic drugs at the Ain Abbassa psychiatric hospital in Sétif over the past three months. Its objective is to facilitate the monitoring of this consumption. The findings indicate that the majority of costs associated with schizophrenia treatment result from hospitalization. It appears that the new antipsychotics reduce the overall costs of treatment. Compared to conventional neuroleptics, individuals with schizophrenia treated with the new antipsychotics are less likely to be hospitalized than before treatment, and the average length of hospital stay has also been reduced. Thus, we can say that our study is far from being able to reach a concrete conclusion on the effectiveness of the products used, or to establish a directly proportional link between this and the consumption rate due to several difficulties that limited our study, namely: problems of shortages and unavailability of medications, absence of computerized patient records and difficulties accessing their data, and lack of cooperation from staff.
