Abstract
In this study, two types of clays were investigated: two swelling clays (montmorillonite and layered double hydroxides, LDHs) and one non-swelling clay of the halloysite type. A total of 22 adsorbent materials were synthesized and characterized using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Isotherms adsorption–desorption of azote analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (IRTF), thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersIIIe X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX), and isoelectric point determination. Three types of dyes were used as probe molecules. The optical density of the dyes after adsorption was evaluated by UV–visible spectroscopy. The removal of dye-based pollutants by adsorption was investigated as a function of several experimental parameters, namely pH, initial concentration, contact time, and temperature. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were modeled using different theoretical models and complemented by statistical physics analyses. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) were performed to investigate the adsorption mechanisms at the atomic scale. The adsorption mechanisms of the dyes on the different adsorbents were further elucidated using IRTF spectroscopy
