Abstract
The reliable development of very high voltage cables with synthetic insulation required an in-depth of the base materials, their compatibilities, and their aging laws. The characteristics of synthetic insulators, different from those of impregnated paper insulations, required extensive research to define the essential tests for verifying their suitability and to develop appropriate specifications. This thesis work focuses on the study of improving the performance of underground high-voltage cables through the introduction of the composite materials concept. The new physico-chemical characterization of dielectrics undoubtedly requires the development of numerical and experimental studies for the advancement of new cables. Because the materials currently used present certain
disadvantages such as significant dielectric losses starting from a certain value of the operating voltage, and failure can occur under strong fields in cavities in very short times.
