Abstract

Conventional imaging commonly used in dental practices can only show a 2D image of an anatomical volume that is originally 3D. This led to the development of three-dimensional imaging. Cone beam CT, by its very nature, overcomes many problems associated with compressing three-dimensional anatomy into 2D images. It eliminates anatomical distortion, noise, and temporal perspective. It also allows for more precise diagnoses and, in many cases, better-adapted treatment, highlighting lesions that would have gone unnoticed with 2D radiography. The 2009 HAS (French National Authority for Health) report indicates that cone beam CT is valuable in endodontics and endodontic surgery when the information provided by clinical examination and conventional radiography is insufficient for diagnosis. The current approach to radiation protection provides a solid basis for protecting the public, workers, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
