Abstract
Climate change is one of the prominent of the 21st century, due to its negative effects on all different development sectors. Algeria, by its geographical and climatic position, is influenced by the climate change, which is expressed through the qualitative and quantitative decrease of water resources especially after the population growth in the last decades. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of climate change on resources in a semi-arid environment, in this case the Ain Azel plain in the northern Algeria. For a period of
63 years (1958-2021), the climatological analyses shows a decrease in rainfall especially after the year 2013, and an increase in temperature with breaks between 1984 and 1986. An increasing trend towards aridity is revealed by the temporal evolution of the aridity index (SPI) in the study region. The analysis of the climate models reveals an increase in temperatures predicted in the and 8.5 scenarios, with an estimated warming of 0.3°C. As for precipitation, there is a decrease under both the RCP4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, with deficits of around 28 and 30 mm, respectively. The piezometric map shows a decrease in level from 2004 to 2023 of about ten meters in average.
