Abstract

More and more patients prefer to turn to medicines that they describe as "softer", more "natural", less "chemical". The problem is that patients often mistakenly consider that what is natural is safe. However, like any drug, a phytomedicine can induce side effects or be at the origin of more or less serious drug interaction (s). The objective of this work is to determine the presence of drug interactions between herbal medicines and cardiovascular drugs in drug prescriptions. The statistical analysis of 71 prescriptions revealed that the risk of interaction represents 3%, 56% of the prescriptions were noncompliant and contained interactions between the different prescribed drugs of which 6% were associations advised against, 36% of the associations to be taken into account. 58% of associations requiring precautions for use, this study also demonstrated that the use of herbal medicines by prescribers represents only 21% and that polymedication and self-medication by plants represent in some cases case a real cause of interaction. Much research is yet to be done to clearly demonstrate the interaction mechanisms involved, but the scientific community is increasingly taking this risk of interaction between medicinal plants and conventional medicines seriously.
