Abstract

Scientific research in biology has evolved from early descriptive natural history into a rigorous experimental discipline grounded in observation, hypothesis formulation, and empirical validation (Mayr, 1982; Russell, 2010). Initial biological inquiry primarily focused on the classification and description of living organisms, particularly within the framework of Aristotelian natural philosophy and later Linnaean taxonomy (Bowler, 2003). Subsequent conceptual and methodological breakthroughs-such as the development of cell theory, Darwinian evolutionary theory (Darwin, 1859), the emergence of microbiology (Pasteur, 1861), and the rise of molecular biology in the twentieth century (Watson et Crick, 1953)-transformed biology into a modern experimental science based on causal explanation and quantitative analysis.' In contemporary biology, research extends beyond direct observation to include controlled experimentation, the use of model organisms, and computational approaches integrating molecular, organismal, and ecological scales (Alberts et al., 2015). Methodologically, the history of biological research reflects a progressive refinement in experimental control, measurement precision, and statistical inference (Fisher, 1925). This evolution enabled the systematic testing of causal relationships across physiology, genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry.
