Abstract

The choice of the landscape as an object of research is motivated by a renewed interest for questions relating to the place of man in his environment, the relationship he maintains with his space and the social role of the inhabitant in the approach of the project relating to his urban space the relationship he has with his space and the social role of the inhabitant in the project process, especially the one concerning the heritage of his urban space. The historical richness of the old town of Béjaia, its strategic location on the Mediterranean basin and the very particular morphology of its site have generated unique landscapes. The rehabilitation, restoration and redevelopment operations carried out on a few heritage sites in the old town remain isolated, with no overall reflection on the specificity of the sensory experience of public spaces and their dynamics. Based on this observation, this thesis focuses on the forgotten sensitive dimension of the old town of Béjaia. The main hypothesis is built around the question of the heritage richness of the old town of Béjaia which certainly resides in the materiality of an architectural and urban heritage whose historical and aesthetic values are recognized, but also and above all in the sensitive and daily experience of its heritage places and the resulting ambiances. Thus, this research is devoted to the study of the experience of public space; and in order to reveal the feelings of people moving along a route, we have chosen the go-along method combined with other methods : the documentary study, the walking and preliminary observation of the places, semi-structured interviews with local public actors and short exploratory interviews with users of the old town of Béjaia. The results showed the preponderance of senses other than vision in the grasping of place. Indeed, all the senses are mobilized and interact to reveal the multisensory richness of the landscapes and the feeling of attachment to the place. This sensitive dimension, through the atmospheres of the old town of Béjaia could feed the content of the legal and operational tools of patrimonialization.
