Abstract
This work focused on the study of plasticization of the polylactic acid (PLA) by ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and
acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). It is made by mixing of the different formulations PLA-EVA and PLA-EVA-ATBC in
plastographe at different content; on the other hand we have prepared formulations based on PLA- LDPE to study the effect of
vinyl acetate on properties of PLA- EVA blends.
The structural properties of the blends were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction
(XRD) to detect structural changes; the thermal behavior of the materials was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The plasticizing effect of the PLA by EVA and ATBC, on the mechanical behavior was
studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).
Study by FTIR confirmed that there is no structural change of the blends with addition of the EVA and the ATBC plasticizer.
DSC shows that glass transition temperature (Tg) and the degree of crystallinity are affected by addition of the EVA and ATBC.
This result was confirmed by XRD. According to the TGA, we have state that the EVA is less stable than the PLA, and the
addition of ATBC plasticizer makes PLA thermally less stable. Also at constant temperatures, the rate of weight loss decreases
with the increase in the EVA rate, on the other hand, the addition of ATBC plasticizer increases the degradation rate. Study by
DMA showed partial miscibility for all formulations
