Abstract

The therapies as the phytotherapy are not stillconsidered as treatments in strictlyspoken. But itis not becausewecangetthemwithout prescription thatthey are withoutrisk. Indeed, sideeffects and interactions canoccur. Diabetesis a major public healthproblem, the use of phytotherapyisfrequent in Algeria. Our researchaims to identify the medicinal plants used, the methods of their use, sideeffects, toxicity, contraindication and interactions betweenmedicinal plants, citing as an example: Fenugreek + oral antidiabetics (sulfonamides). This interaction isbased on the addition of hypoglycemiceffects. In combination, close monitoring of blood glucose and signs of hypoglycemiaisnecessary. Whichrequiresphytovigilance. Phytovigilanceconsists in supervision of sideeffects and drug interactions consequential to use of herbalmedicinalproducts, herbalfoodsupplements, herbalcosmetics and/or medicinal plants. It includesthus pharmacovigilance applied to phytotherapy. Becomingnecessaryowing to (acute or chronic) toxicityrisks or to drug interactions risks (of pharmacocinetical or pharmacodynamicalkind), as far as itconcerns interactions betweenseveralassociated plants or between a plant and a chemical or biotechnologicalallopathicmedicine.
