Abstract
This thesis addresses the architectural question of the evolution of Mozabite housing outside the desert, focusing on the town of Sétif. It examines the way in which a new residential typology can meet the identity requirements of the Mozabites, while adapting to the urban, social and climatic constraints of the Algerian Tell. The main objective is to identify and reinterpret the enduring principles of traditional Mzab architecture within a logic of cultural continuity open to modernity. The chosen methodology is based on an in-depth review of Mzabite housing typologies, through a comparative analysis of traditional housing and its current forms in different contexts, in order to identify permanent features and understand the evolution and mutations of this society. This approach is complemented by a social survey conducted by means of a questionnaire, aimed at understanding the daily practices and current needs of the inhabitants. The various summaries resulting from these studies are used to draw up the architectural program, leading to a proposal for a contemporary residence for the Mozabites in Sétif as a response to the problematic. This study is limited by the difficulty of measuring certain changing cultural values, and by the lack of studies dealing with the problem of reference or contemporary Mozabite housing outside its original context. Consequently, this work can be seen as a first step in a broader study.
