Abstract

Zinc is an important trace element for the organism which is involved in more than 200 enzymatic reactions, among its most important roles : biochemical roles, antioxidant role and renforcing of the immune system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, zinc has occupied a very important place in therapeutics either as a drug or as a dietary supplement, in the context of preventing infection by coronavirus or treating its symptoms. Our study was made after having noticed a significant increase in zinc consumption by the population. This dissertation focuses on the evaluation of the consumption of this trace element during the pandemic as much as the specialties prescribed, advised or simply sold in pharmacies, as well as the level of knowledge of physicians and pharmacy practitioners on the toxicity, drug interactions and adverse effects of zinc and even the foods rich in this element. Our survey is based on questionnaires for general practitioners and specialists, dispensing physicians and the general public. After analysis of the collected answers, we can conclude that the consumption of zinc was too high during this pandemic either under medical prescription or self-medication without taking consideration into the risks of toxicity and adverse effects, either by the medical staff or by the patients who considered this medicine as candy. This remains an important task for doctors and pharmacists who must have a minimum of information to transmit to patients.
