Abstract

Medication errors constitute a genuine public health problem, due to their frequency of occurrence and the serious adverse effects they can cause. Their impact on health has been highlighted by several studies. However, it is possible to implement safety measures to limit their occurrence. One of the fundamental approaches to securing the medication management process lies in training healthcare professionals to detect, analyze, and prevent these errors. Simulation in healthcare is an increasingly used educational method. The medication error simulation room is one such method; a fun and innovative tool, it facilitates learning by cultivating a positive view of errors. It is with the aim of raising awareness among healthcare professionals about the medication risks of cytotoxic drugs that we proposed a scenario for setting up a medication error simulation room in oncology. Materials and Methods As part of proposing a scenario, we conducted, firstly, a critical analysis of the first error room, and following this analysis, we obtained additional information, expanded our knowledge on the topic, and established new working hypotheses to optimize this year's error room, and secondly, a study of the cytotoxic drug circuit at the Sétif Cancer Center in order to characterize the types of errors occurring or potentially occurring in the oncology field. Result The typical scenario we developed contains about twenty errors which are grouped into categories corresponding to several areas related to the drug management of a cancer patient at the CAC: 2 concern patient identification, 5 the prescription of cytotoxic drugs, 2 the preparation of the treatment to be administered, 4 the administration itself and the 5 Rights rule, one error concerning the management of the reaction related to the infusion, 2 hygiene and the risk of infection, and one waste management and blood exposure accident.
