Abstract

Gum diseases are among the most common oral health issues worldwide, affecting millions of people. These conditions range from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. The main causes include plaque buildup, bacterial growth along the gumline, poor oral hygiene, and the use of harsh or inappropriate toothbrushes. As the global demand for natural and safe alternatives grows, we turned our attention to alum, a time-tested natural compound known for its antiseptic, astringent, and anti-inflammatory properties. Alum helps soothe irritated gums, reduce inflammation, and combat harmful bacteria—all while being non-toxic and safe for human use. For our graduation project, we developed an eco-friendly, biodegradable toothbrush, made from renewable plant fibers and free from plastics or industrial chemicals. The design ensures it is gentle on the gums, environmentally safe, and effective for daily oral care. We produced two versions of the toothbrush: A standard natural toothbrush. A second version soaked in alum solution, to enhance its antibacterial and gum-soothing properties. We conducted four experiments to evaluate both versions in terms of plaque removal, gum health improvement, and user comfort. The results indicated that the alum-treated toothbrush reduced inflammation and bleeding more effectively, providing users with a cleaner, fresher oral feel—without any adverse effects. This project demonstrates a step forward toward a natural, safe, and sustainable oral care solution, merging traditional wisdom with modern health needs.
