Abstract

Plants have been the first and main therapeutic tool available to man for many centuries in many civilizations that have developed the knowledge and use of these medicinal plants. Ethnobotanical study plays a key role in the exploration of this ancestral knowledge and the translation of know-how into scientific knowledge. That is to say, a survey of Origanum majorana was carried out with the aim of evaluating its use and effectiveness and detecting its adverse effects. This ethnobotanical study lasted three months and was conducted using questionnaire with 125 people from the general population and 66 herbalists from Setif. The results obtained show that there is a clear predominance of women (80%) particularly young people (78%) and university level (40%) and that this plant is mainly used for the treatment of gynecological pathologies (63.64%) whose hormonal disorders occupy the top of the list (43.63%) come secondarily intestinal disorders (10.91%) and some nervous system problems (1.82%). The leaf is the most used part (96%) in the form of an infusion (80%) for random dosages and durations of treatment. Effectiveness proven by users with no adverse effects from which comes the satisfaction of using the plant. The benefits of marjoram concerning its effectiveness and safety may have an absolute necessity for the synthesis of a drug equivalent to the plant and this remains one of the most important recommendations to treat so many health problems.
