Abstract

This Dissertation aims at addressing the issue of the Ottoman military heritage of the Casbah of Algiers that seems to be neglected. It is an appeal for raising awareness about the identity of the place and its history by opening the debate about the absence of reflection on the question concerning the development of a heritage that deserves to be known and classified. Our experimental choice was carried in the military circle of Algiers (the former barracks of El Khaddarine Janissary), which is a very illustrative example of military architecture from the Ottoman era. Our problem consists of giving value to this heritage through highlighting the associations between traditional actions and the actions of today. The title of this dissertation, Giving value to the Turkish naval heritage: implicitly recalling the history of the Ottoman Empire’s founding in Algeria through its legendary marine fleet by trying to associate the various categories of the Ottoman army, and interpreting them through a project that combines them. The first part thus makes a theoretical guide and it represents the referential base, and the second part applies to describe the object of study through a thorough analysis, while the last section is devoted to the intervention project approach.
