| dc.description.abstract | The plant Ajuga iva, known locally as chandgoura, is present globally since ancient times. It is used in various sectors, particularly in traditional and modern medicine. The primary aim of this work is to calculate the water content, yield, and quantitative levels of phenols, flavonoids, and tannins in the crude methanolic extracts of the Ajuga iva plant. This study investigates in addition tothe antioxidant properties of the roots extract, the possible toxic effect through the morphological and hemolytictest of red blood cells when different concentrations of the extract at different concentrations of sodium chloride where used. In addition, the absorption spectrum of the plant’s crude extracts was examined across the visible to ultraviolet wavelength range. The findings reveal that the water content in Ajuga iva roots is 47.90% compared to 52.10% dry matter, while for the leaves, it is 46.36% compared to 53.63% dry matter. The yield of the aqueous extract from the roots is calculated at 13.36%. The extracts also contain a substantial amountof total phenols, estimated at 64.92µgEGA/mgExt. The flavonoid content in the roots is estimated at 0 ,994µgEQ/mgExt, while tannins were approximately 34,83µgETA/mgExt. Concerning the hemolytictest the methanolic extract has a slight protective effect and did not show any toxic effect at the concentrations used. The microscopic observation ofthe RBC morphology did not show any change. The extract did not as well provoke any additional hemolysis at low sodium chloride concentrations when the red blood cells are at their peak fragility nor at isotonic or near-isotonicconcentrations indicating the nontoxicity of theplant. The DPPH anti oxidant essay revealed that the extract has a significant effect with an IC50 of 0.514 an 0,3mg/ml for the extrait dissolved in methanol and in distilled water respectively. Moreover, the analysis of the absorption spectrum of the ethanolic extract of Ajuga iva unveiled absorption peaks in the visible and ultraviolet spectrum, indicating the presence of diverse chemical compounds. The implications of these findings areelaborated in the corresponding section. | |
