Abstract
The influenza virus (Influenza) and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) are two highly
contagious respiratory viruses. They are enveloped RNA viruses; the first one is a negativesense RNA virus with a helical capsid, while the latter is a positive-sense RNA virus with an
icosahedral capsid. The influenza virus evolves through frequent mutations (antigenic drift
and breakage), while SARS-CoV-2 is distinguished by a strong capacity for genetic
recombination. Both can cause severe inflammatory responses (cytokine storms) and require
targeted antiviral treatments. This study highlights the importance to better understand and
control these infections.
