Abstract
The respiratory support via an endotracheal tube is a crucial tool, although it remains an invasive procedure with inherent risks and constitutes the main risk factor for ventilatorassociated pneumonia (VAP). VAP is of interest to various healthcare professionals because it represents not only the leading cause of nosocomial infection in intensive care units but also the most lethal, and is known to generate considerable additional costs. This motivated the undertaking of this study, the main objective was to establish a surveillance system to determine baseline VAP rates in the surgical intensive care unit of the Sétif University Hospital in order to facilitate the detection of any increase in VAP incidence rates and/or isolation of a particular germ or one presenting an unusual resistance profile
