Abstract
Cholera remains a major public health issue, especially in regions where sanitary infrastructure is poor and access to safe drinking water is limited. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of this infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, by addressing its biological, clinical, and epidemiological aspects. The study begins with a historical overview of the evolution of cholera, highlighting the factors that have contributed to its recurrent spread through various pandemics. It then focuses on Vibrio cholerae, the responsible pathogen, by examining its morphological, biochemical, and antigenic characteristics, as well as its ability to survive in aquatic environments and produce toxins. From a clinical perspective, typical manifestations such as severe watery diarrhea and rapid dehydration are analyzed, with special attention given to diagnostic tools ranging from classical examinations to modern techniques such as PCR and rapid tests. The analysis extends to prevention strategies, emphasizing the importance of hygiene, water sanitation, community awareness, and the use of oral vaccines, while also underlining the key role played by international organizations in responding to health crises. Finally, treatment approaches are explored, including protocols for oral and intravenous rehydration, the rational use of antibiotics, and community-based management strategies aimed at reducing mortality and controlling outbreaks. This work concludes with a reflection on future prospects in the fight against cholera, stressing the importance of research, prevention, and strengthened international cooperation to permanently eradicate the disease.
