Abstract

In recent years, the aesthetics of the orthodontic appliance has become a subject of interest to an increasing number of adults receiving orthodontic treatment. The future orthodontic patient is now expecting a beautiful smile at the end of treatment, but is also concerned with appearance during treatment. In an attempt to respond to this need for an attractive appliace, different aesthetic options appeared. Lingual orthodontics, transparent plastic aligners (Invisalign) and colored dental brackets represent some of the effective solutions that do not harm the patient from an aesthetic point of view. Plastic brackets were marketed as the aesthetic alternative to metal brackets. These polycarbonate brackets quickly lost their favor due to the discoloration and distortion of the grooves caused by the absorption of the water. Monocrystalline brackets and polycrystalline ceramic materials have entered the field of orthodontics as an aesthetic appliace that, unlike plastic brackets, could withstand most orthodontic forces and resist colouration. In lingual orthodontics, the brackets are placed on the lingual face of the teeth and therefore the device is discreet. As a third solution, the Invisalign is an orthodontic technique for aligning teeth thanks to the successive use of customized translucent removable aligners. It is a method that is discrete and invisible, because it does not use wires, or brackets. The considerable effort, the methodological approach and the vast experience gained over the years by various pioneers in the discipline have proved that this specialty of orthodontics meets the ever-growing cosmic demands of patients who insist on appliances that are not visible and at the same time wish to have their malocclusion treated.
