Abstract

Caffeine is one of the most studied nutritional ingredients today; however, several questions and assumptions regarding its possible adverse health effects are still discussed. Several studies have been conducted on the consumption and risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with caffeine intake during pregnancy. Our descriptive cross-sectional study carried out with 180 women in the wilaya of : Sétif. Béjaia and M'sila aims to assess the consumption of caffeine during pregnancy and its associated risks using a questionnaire given to each woman. 91% of the population studied declared a consumption of caffeine, of which 43% had at least one of the risks associated with caffeine (low birth weight, congenital malformations, premature births and miscarriage). Among the 9% who do not consume caffeine 8% had at least one adverse pregnancy outcome. Scientific research and our study show that caffeine is not a harmless molecule during pregnancy and can be considered a factor leading to what is called a high-risk pregnancy. Therefore, a reasonable consumption of caffeine during pregnancy is recommended.
