Abstract

Metal packaging represents a major source of chemical contamination in food, particularly in the African context where regulations governing food contact materials remain insufficient. To provide a rigorous assessment of this issue, a systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, focusing on contaminants from metal packaging in Africa — specifically heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, tin, aluminum), bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF), and phthalates (DEHP, DBP, DEP). The results reveal frequent contamination of canned foods and bottled water, with concentrations sometimes exceeding international regulatory limits, particularly for lead, cadmium, and bisphenol A. Key factors influencing the migration of these substances include temperature, storage duration, food pH, and packaging quality. These findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen African regulatory frameworks, improve the analytical capacity of local laboratories, and intensify controls to ensure food safety for consumers.
