Abstract
Artemisia herba-alba is a traditional medicinal plant well known for its anti-inflammatory
properties, long used in folk medicine to treat various inflammatory conditions. The present
study aims to evaluate its anti-inflammatory activity through two extracts prepared from the
aerial parts: an aqueous extract (AE) and an ethanolic extract (EE). The evaluation is based on
in vitro assays, including protein denaturation inhibition (bovine serum albumin and
ovalbumin), and in vivo tests conducted on murine models of acute inflammation, namely ear
edema induced by xylene and croton oil, as well as paw edema induced by carrageenan. In vitro
results showed superior efficacy of AE in the BSA test at the highest concentration (10 mg/ml),
with an inhibition rate of 87.838 ± 0.858%, compared to 79.898 ± 0.898% for EE, values close
to those obtained with aspirin at the same concentration 93.947 ± 0.848%. Conversely, EE
outperformed AE in the egg white test, with an inhibition rate of 76.092 ± 1.119% compared to
52.678 ± 1.327% for AE, and 81.105 ± 1.592% for salicylic acid. Regarding the in vivo assays,
both extracts significantly inhibited xylene-induced ear edema, with a slight superiority of EE,
whose inhibition rate reached 86.03 ± 6.246% at a dose of 50 mg/kg, versus 80.45 ± 7.122%
for AE at 100 mg/kg, both exceeding that of indomethacin 69.74 ± 5.606%. In the croton oil
model, EE showed remarkable efficacy with an inhibition rate of 92.47 ± 1.317%, compared to
87.1 ± 4.023% for AE, surpassing the reference anti-inflammatory drug 78.49 ± 4.604%. In the
carrageenan-induced paw edema model
