The effect of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids on blood sugar (Glycaemia)

Abstract

The aim of this research work is to study glucocorticoid steroid hormone and its various effects on animal physiology and its effect on blood sugar level (glycaemia). The first part focused on defining glucocorticoids and their endogenous origins and synthetic modifications, anti-inflammatory effects, their effect on blood sugar level and the mechanism of action, type 2 diabetes study, defining the disease, its pathophysiology and the mechanisms that leads to type 2 diabetes. The practical study concentrated on the effect of glucocorticoids on blood sugar levels in rats. Oral administration was used of prednisolone (20mg) in two different states fasting and non-fasting animals. The results showed the level of blood sugar constant in control rats, in the case of fasting rats the level of blood sugar was raised by 3% after administration of prednisolone, in the case of non-fasting rats, the level of blood sugar was raised by 1%. As a conclusion we observed that the level of blood sugar was slightly raised in the two cases (fasting and non-fasting animals)
