Abstract
Introduction
Non-adherence to treatment is a common phenomenon among patients with diabetes, and its impact on the management of this disease is significant.
Objectives
The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of treatment adherence and identify influencing factors in a diabetic population in the Setif region.
Materials and Methods
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. It was conducted among diabetic patients followed in public hospitals and private clinics in the three regions of the Setif province: Bougaa district, El Eulma district, and Ain Azel district, over a 45-day period, from July 1st to August 15th, 2023.
Adherence was assessed using a questionnaire with two sections:
The first section included sociodemographic characteristics and therapeutic characteristics.
The second part consisted of questions relating to the assessment of therapeutic adherence
from the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) developed
by Morisky et al. Logistic regression was used to identify factors
influencing therapeutic adherence.
Results and discussion
This study included a sample of 99 patients with a mean age of 55 years, with a
predominance of women. We were able to demonstrate therapeutic non-adherence
in 29.8% of patients.
Multivariate analysis identified factors negatively influencing treatment adherence: age, education level, lack of health insurance, lack of dietary restrictions, lack of necessary information about diabetes and its treatment, a duration of diabetes greater than 5 years, the combination of insulin therapy with oral antidiabetic drugs, and the absence of regular blood glucose self-monitoring.
Conclusion: The results of this study reveal that the level of treatment adherence among diabetics is insufficient, hence the need to implement therapeutic education programs in patient care.
